Broncos Build Camaraderie By Starting Bowling League
by FRANK SCHWAB THE GAZETTE
GREENWOOD VILLAGE - None of the Denver Broncos is going to trade in his shoulder pads and start a career with the Professional Bowlers Association, but some of them are comfortable on the lanes.
For the second straight year, coach Mike Shanahan canceled the final practice of minicamp and took the team bowling. Many players knew the way to Arapahoe Bowling Center.
Linebacker Keith Burns said about 20 players, including quarterback Jake Plummer, have gone bowling once a week the past few years. Burns said this year they decided to start their own weekly league, with handicap scoring.
"It's just guys coming out and building camaraderie and having fun at the bowling alley," Burns said.
Kicker Jason Elam rolled a 215, receiver Charlie Adams scored a 212, running back Marty Johnson had a 201, running back Ron Dayne had a 198 and cornerback Darrent Williams rolled a 183.
Each player rolled two games, with the top 10 scorers from the offense, defense and coaching staff moving onto the championship round. The defense won a trophy when Burns' two strikes and nine pins in the 10th frame were enough to outlast receiver Darius Watts' three strikes in the 10th frame.
"He'll never let it go," Watts said about Burns.
The coaches finished third.
"We were complacent," said Shanahan. "We need to practice a little bit."
Shanahan knew that many of his players are pretty good.
"It doesn't surprise you," Shanahan said. "We have a lot of great athletes."
Watts said his bowling average is about 195 and he has a high score of 279.
"I'll get 300 one day," Watts said. "I keep going for it."
Burns said he has been bowling since he was 5 or 6 years old and has an average of about 180 and a high score of 256. He said in the weekly league, the players' competitiveness is evident.
"When we get serious, it gets pretty intense," Burns said.
Like last year, the bowling outing was Shanahan's reward to the team for its productive offseason practices. Denver's first training camp practice is July 28.
"The first phase of having success during the season is having a good offseason," Shanah- an said. "So far we've been able to accomplish that."
Broncos sign linebacker
Free-agent linebacker T.J. Hollowell signed a two-year contract with the Broncos.
The third-year pro has appeared in six regular-season games, two with the New York Jets last season and four in 2004 with the New York Giants, who signed him as an undrafted free agent out of Nebraska.
Hollowell spent the final five weeks of last season on the Chicago Bears' practice squad and also was on the active roster of the Miami Dolphins last season.
In four years at Nebraska, Hollowell had 173 tackles (76 solo), 3.5 sacks, two interceptions, one fumble recovery and one forced fumble.
